Tihar starts on 7 November. If you’re looking for Tihar food in London, this guide covers what’s on the menu, what each dish is like and how to build an order. For dates and traditions, read our Tihar guide.

Missing home at Tihar? Start with a plate that tastes right

If you live in the UK, Tihar can pass quietly. There’s no day off, and most of the five days fall in a working week. This year Laxmi Puja is on a Sunday, and Bhai Tika is on a Wednesday.

The food that’s hard to make here

Sel roti takes time. You soak and grind the rice, get the batter right, then fry ring after ring. At home in Nepal, someone often does that for you. In a shared London flat, there may be no grinder, no spare hour and no one to ask.

That’s where a restaurant can help. We can’t swap places with your family’s kitchen, and we won’t pretend to. But a warm sel roti with achar and curry can bring that morning a little closer.

SELROTI PLATTER

Who this menu is for

If you’re a Nepali living in South East London, it’s for you. That's for students in New Cross and Greenwich, people working shifts in Lewisham, anyone attending their first Tihar away from their families and many of those who have been here for years and still don't miss the table. Those who wish to try out Nepalese festival foods are invited as well.

Pick one night

You don’t have to do all five days. Sunday 8 November is the easiest night for most people. Wednesday 11 November suits an early evening after work. For the traditions behind each day, see our guide to the five days of Tihar. When you’ve picked a night, you can reserve a table or order takeaway.

Tihar menu in Brockley, London: what’s on at Palungo

Prices are right as of 1 November 2026. The full Palungo menu lists everything else.

Selroti Platter (£9.95)

Selroti is a ring of fried rice batter. The outside is crisp. The inside stays soft. Ours arrives with chickpea curry, chopped roast chicken, a fried egg, potato-cucumber achar, puffed rice bread and salad.

How to eat it

Tear off a piece and use it to scoop up the curry. Take a bite of achar between mouthfuls. Eat it while it’s warm, with a cup of tea if you like.

Who it suits

One person who wants a proper plate, or a group that wants a starter for the table. If you’re after sel roti in Brockley, start here.

Mutton Thali (£19.95)

A thali is a set meal built from small dishes on one plate. Ours comes with unlimited servings of Himalayan flavours, as our menu puts it.

Order one each if everyone’s hungry. Looking for a mutton thali in Brockley? This is the one. New to this style of meal? Read what a Thakali thali really is.

MUTTON THALI

Paya Jhol Momo (£13.95)

Jhol is the spiced broth that momo can sit in. Ours is chicken mo:mo in a warm mutton broth, a good bowl for a cold November evening. Want something lighter? Try the Jhol Momo (£10.95) or the Chicken Thukpa (£10.45). Not sure which momo style you like? Our guide to steamed, fried and jhol momo will help.

More plates to share

  • Buff Choila Set (£10.95): smoky and spiced. It works well as a starter for the table.
  • Chicken Sekuwa Set (£8.95): grilled chicken, a lighter way to start.
  • Sisnu Chicken (£9.95): cooked with nettle, and a good pick if you like greens.
  • Mutton Curry (£10.95): the dish to put in the middle of the table.
  • Aloo Tama (£7.95): sour and sharp, so it cuts through richer plates.
  • Chukauni (£4.95): a cool yoghurt side that sits well next to spicy dishes.

Ask the team what to pair with your curries.

Something sweet

Finish with Lalmohan and dahi (£3.95), or a scoop of Masala Chai Ice-cream (£4.95).

Vegetarian and vegan plates

Plenty of guests eat vegetarian or vegan, so we have a good choice. The Vegetarian Thali (£16.95) is the simplest place to start. Paneer Palungo suits vegetarians. For vegan, try the Vegan Momo Platter (£14.95) or Tofu Palungo (£8.95), and ask the team about a vegan Thakali Thali. More ideas are in our list of vegan Nepali dishes near Lewisham.

What Nepalis traditionally eat for Tihar

A few dishes come up again and again. Sel roti is the best known. Nepal Traveller’s Tihar recipes describe anarsa, a sweet rice treat topped with sesame, and fini roti, a crisp layered bread. Both are made as offerings to Laxmi. Sweets like laddu, barfi and jalebi are common, and many families cook goat. Festival food also varies a lot by community, as The Kathmandu Post’s food feature shows.

Most of these are made at home. Our kitchen serves sel roti and festival plates, so you can taste part of that table here. Order now or book online.
